Introduction

It is proposed to establish a Tinkering & Prototyping lab at the department of Architecture, Planning and Design to enhance the teaching pedagogy & learning and encourage innovative thinking of the students especially for the interdisciplinary and technology oriented courses. Having such a facility helps the faculty to teach relevant courses practically through demonstration of how a system or equipment functions and the principles/ technology behind them. This pedagogical approach brings the flexibility for the learner/ student to understand the interdisciplinary concepts by tinkering and hands on training. These hands-on and practical sessions help to enhance explorative and intuitive learning of the students. This method also promotes the students to pursue their interests by collaborating among the student groups and supporting in peer-to-peer learning through lab based exercises.
US$ 5000 (₹4.2 Lakhs) grant for purchasing the used (second hand) equipment. Space for the proposed lab shall be facilitated by the department.
Estimated Timeline for the Project
2-3 Months from the time of the receipt of the donation/grant
Expected Impact
Currently, undergraduate curriculum of the department offers several interdisciplinary course modules based on the engineering expertise such as the following.
- AR309 Building Services
- AR308 Building Science and Services II
- AR411 Green Building Techniques
- AR424 Intelligent Buildings
Tinkering lab provides a space for keeping the working models/ prototypes and used (second hand) equipment purchased from the market, including, water coolers, fans, motors, air coolers, split AC’s, Heat exchangers, flat plate collectors, heat pumps, radiators, humidifiers, dehumidifiers etc., Further, along with the proposed equipment, several sensors, control modules and actuators can also be provided to the students to try hand-on and iterate various functional and innovative control strategies. The current Building Sciences lab facility at the department compliments the facility by extending several measuring equipment that the lab already has. Besides this the lab would provide several tinkering tools such as ESP32, Audrino and Rapsberry pi modules for exploring the ideas and concepts that students would like explore and test the performance.
The proposed lab shall therefore support the teaching and learning facilities and boost the experimental, engaging and more inclusive curriculum of the department.
