Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCD): A Smart Way for Alumni 70+ to Give Back
As the IIT (BHU) Foundation continues to expand its mission to support scholarships, research, and campus development, we’re introducing a meaningful and tax-efficient way for our senior alumni to contribute—Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs).
If you’re age 70½ or older, you may be eligible to make a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) directly from your Individual Retirement Account (IRA) to the IIT (BHU) Foundation—a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. This allows you to support your alma mater while receiving significant tax advantages.
What Is a QCD?
A Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) is a provision in the U.S. tax code that allows individuals aged 70½ or older to transfer up to $108,000 per year (as of 2025) directly from their IRA to a qualified charity—without counting the transfer as taxable income.
The donation must go directly from your IRA provider to the charity, and it can satisfy all or part of your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) for the year.
Key Features
- You must be at least 70½ years old at the time of the transfer.
- The QCD can be made only from a traditional or Roth IRA.
- Funds must go directly from your IRA custodian to the IIT (BHU) Foundation.
- The maximum allowed per individual in one year is $108,000.
- The amount distributed does not increase your taxable income, helping to reduce your overall tax burden and potentially avoid certain tax bracket phaseouts.
Benefits of Making a QCD
- Reduces your taxable income while supporting a cause that matters to you.
- Counts toward your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) if applicable.
- Provides a direct and efficient way to make a philanthropic impact without itemizing deductions.
- Strengthens IIT (BHU)’s capacity to fund scholarships, innovation, and faculty excellence.
Who Should Consider a QCD?
QCDs are particularly beneficial for retirees who wish to support charitable causes while minimizing the tax implications of mandatory IRA withdrawals. Many alumni have found this to be a simple and powerful way to give back to their alma mater while optimizing their financial planning.
