The Department of Pharmaceutics

The Department of Pharmaceutics was established at Banaras Hindu University as early as 1932. The University takes pride in being not just the first Institution in the country to start the Degree level Pharmacy Education, but also the pioneering center for Pharmacy Education in the Asian, African and Far-East region of the world.It was started with Late Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya Ji’s inspiration and the untiring dedication and enthusiasm of Late Professor M.L.Schroff (also known as the Father and Pioneer of Pharmacy Education in India). Prof. Shroff has done engineering from the Engineering college of Banaras Hindu University and later did MS from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA. From here, it has been a long journey of almost 90 years for the country’s pharmaceutical profession.

Timeline:
1932: Study of Pharmaceutical Chemistry introduced
1934: 2-year B.Sc in Botany with Pharmacognosy and Pharmaceutical Studies started
1935: 3-Year degree of Bachelor of Pharmacy was introduced
1939: Establishment of a separate College of Technology
1940: M.Pharma introduced
2013: Converted to 4-year B.Tech programme in Pharmacy
2021: Has 4-year B.Tech, 5-year Integrated Dual degree, 2-year M.Pharm, and Ph.D. programme

The alumni of this Department are occupying the highest positions in both academic institutions and industries in India and abroad. They are spread over the US, Europe, UK, Malaysia, and other countries.
